Rita began teaching Inuktitut in Puvirnituq from to and later continued her higher education in Montreal's Dawson College. From to , Rita worked at the Kativik School Board based in Montreal first, as an Executive Secretary and then later as an interpreter from Inuktitut to English and vice versa. She later became the Secretary General and held this position for 10 years, and in October she became the Director General.

Keren Rice has worked with speakers of Dene languages in the Mackenzie River valley for many years, and has been involved in language description and documentation, theoretical linguistic work, and revitalization. She was the founding director of Indigenous Studies at the University of Toronto, where language courses were offered from the very start, and served as director for many years, most recently between and As part of this, she worked with the language instructors in developing concepts for language teaching and how those meshed with linguistics.

A PhD student at McGill University, her research aims to develop an approach supporting advanced speakers to reach a mastery level of proficiency through an Indigenization of second language pedagogies.
